2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, F-150 Hybrid offer Level-2 vehicle-to-vehicle charging - Green Car Congress

The available Pro Power Onboard feature enables the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid trucks to function as power sources on wheels with multiple uses. Now, Ford is adding another benefit: vehicle-to-vehicle charging using the Ford-exclusive Pro Power Onboard 240-volt outlet.

When connected to an F-150 Lightning or F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid with the optional 9.6 kW (F-150 Lightning) or 7.2 kW (F-150 Power Boost Hybrid) Pro Power Onboard, the Ford Mobile Power Cord charger can deliver Level-2 charging that’s estimated to add an average range of 20 miles per charging hour on a Mustang Mach-E with extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive. It will add up to 13 miles of charge per hour on the upcoming F-150 Lightning, and will add an average range of 10 miles per charging hour to a Ford E-Transit low-roof cargo van.

Customers can easily take advantage of this capability, using a widely available power adaptor to link the Ford Mobile Power Cord to their truck. Once connected to the 240-volt Pro Power Onboard outlet, customers can use the Mobile Power Cord to charge a range of all-electric vehicles that use the SAE J1772 charge port.

This includes the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Ford E-Transit electric van and the all-new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, as well as vehicles from other manufacturers.

The F-150 Lightning can even be used to power a home using Ford Intelligent Backup Power. Instead of installing a home generator or battery backup, the truck can be used to power a typical-size home up to three days in the event if a power outage. The compact electric powertrain also allowed Ford to create the first Mega Power Frunk—a front trunk that not only offers multiple power outlets but also provides up to 14 cu.-ft. of lockable storage.

There are so many new opportunities to innovate with features and functions made possible only through electrification. This really hit home during the Texas power crisis last February, which left millions in the cold. F-150 Hybrid helped many Texans keep warm and powered up during those difficult times thanks to Pro Power Onboard, and we’re trying to do even more with F-150 Lightning.—Patrick Soderborg, Ford e-powertrain systems engineer

V2X is the killer EV app. Moves the vehicle into a whole new realm, not just a transportation device any more.

Could even compete with battery packs that sit in your garage doing nothing else if you work from home.

Eliminates noisy, stinky job site generators.

Whole new ball game for RVers.

Imagine giving that front trunk not just a drain, like in the Mach E, but an A/C air vent.

Remember the Dodge Ram contractor edition (I think)?  It was going to be a hybrid pickup with enough AC generating capability to power a job site.  Pity it never got built.  It would have had next to zero risk of running out of energy and leaving no way to get home at the end of the day.

It certainly would have been a lot cleaner than a typical small genset, which are notoriously dirty since they have little or no emissions controls, depending on their age and state of sale.

On the lightning, it would seem to be a fairly easy task to set a discharge threshold when using the accessory power outlet to disable use when the battery ran down to a lower limit. It may have that feature now, will be interesting to fully explore the V2X capabilities.

So this truck could be used to refill the batteries of stranded BEVs as a sideline, added to Lyft or Uber Eats. Maybe a post on social media to meet at a remote commuter lot where multiple cars would be topped off. Range Extended BEVs aren't being given enough attention though. VW's XL1 showed the way. The world doesn't need to be transitioned by force to some 'perfect' energy source, this is technically impossible, economically impossible, unnecessary, and unrealistic. I'm also mystified by the slow adoption of Scandia's ducted diesel injector technology, which works so well that emission equipment won't be necessary for diesel range extenders. Using these smart conventional technologies will clean up transportation much quicker and far more cheaply and with much less disruption.
